During research week, Nelson Mandela University is honoured to partner with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS), the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) to host the Annual Young Scientists Conference with the theme “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive lifelong, quality and relevant learning in Africa”.
 
In the last three and a half years, Nelson Mandela University has witnessed a transformative shift in its research landscape, solidifying its position as a dynamic hub for academic exploration and international collaboration. With marked growth in international connections and networks in the past year, the university’s commitment to global engagement has never been stronger. Notably, the institution’s innovation focus is maturing, evident in the rise of intellectual property awareness and the successful initiation of technology transfer initiatives.
 
Our dedication to cultivating an environment conducive to innovative research and postgraduate education is exemplified through comprehensive Research and Development initiatives. From a modest foundation, the university has significantly increased the number of postdoctoral fellows, fostering a vibrant academic community. The resounding accomplishments of our researchers have been duly recognized, with global acclaim in the recent THE Impact Rankings, the inspiring platform of TEDx engagements and the launch of the Mandela Institute for Sustainable Futures. These milestones underscore our commitment to global collaborations, industry partnerships, entrepreneurship, and holistic education.
 
Building upon the fruitful outcomes of the 2023 Research Week, the 2024 edition promises to expand horizons further. Our focus is on unravelling the intricacies of the research and innovation ecosystem, spanning across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
